Precious Moment:Jordan Cries at Sons Game

I know we don't do sports here but this is a beautiful story to start the day with

PEORIA, Ill. - Michael Jordan celebrated another Chicago basketball championship - his son's.

Marcus Jordan, son of the Bulls' six-time champion, scored a game-high 19 points to lead Chicago Whitney Young to a 69-66 victory over Waukegan in the Illinois Class 4A championship Saturday.

As Marcus Jordan and his teammates celebrated on the court after the final buzzer, Michael Jordan stood quietly, clapping his hands with tears in his eyes.

"Crying?" the NBA great said in response to a reporter's question. "I'm not crying. Not for me, anyway."

The younger Jordan was key down the stretch after two teammates fouled out, hitting four of four free throws in the final 3 minutes to seal the victory.

"Awesome," Marcus Jordan said. "Just awesome."

Michael Jordan, part-owner of the Charlotte Bobcats, skipped his team's home loss to Indiana so he could attend his son's game. Another son, Jeff Jordan, plays basketball for the University of Illinois.

Joe Shows Off His Softer Side in His 9th Solo Album

Make sure you check the current issuse of Hip Hop Weekly. Joe is back with "Hitmania" and has a cover story with them.

Fat Joe feels as royal as Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America" every time he steps foot in the motherland.
"Africa, what a lovely place," Joe beamed of the continent. He performs out there several times a year. The Bronx native's new single, "One," features one of Joe's peers who is adored in Africa: Akon.
"It's feeling great, man," Joe said of the response he's been getting from the record. "The video looks beautiful. Akon, it was an honor to work with him. We've been friends for years and featured on tracks together. We finally got our own record together. He's the King of Africa. I'm the Prince of Africa. I get nothing but love from Africa. The people are amazing. It was a natural thing for me and 'Kon to get together and make a song."
"One" is all about finding that special soul mate, and Joe said he looked to his happy marriage for inspiration.

"It's inspired by life a lot," he described. "As I listen to it, I think about the relationship with my wife and how we came a long way. At the same time, it's everybody's life. It's the working man's life. It's related to everybody. Everybody feels that way. We all want somebody."
Joe said the key to marriage is working with your spouse to grow.
"A lot of work," he said. "Anybody who's successful a long number of years, it took a lot of work, perseverance to not quit, to not give up on each other and say, 'Yo, we love each other. We're going to be together forever.' Everybody that gets married hopes to be in love and be together forever, but you gotta work. It's real work. It's great, though."

Joe's work ethic is also strong in his career. His new album, Jealous Ones Still Envy 2 (J.O.S.E. 2), due May 19, is the sequel to his highest-selling LP to date.
"This record has so many hits, I promise you," he said. "People still deny me, so I just hit them with a new thing I called 'force fields.' You can't stop them, you can't break them."
T-Pain appears on "Put You in the Game," and "Hey Joe" is an all-out gladiator rap record with assaulting lyrics and a wicked beat to match. Meanwhile, Raekwon the Chef checks in on "Ice Cream," a sex anthem of sorts. That record shouldn't be confused with Rae's '90s classic "Ice Cream." They don't sound anything alike. Joe also introduces some new talent on the album, like O.Z., along with Lil' Kim, Ron Browz and Lil Wayne.

Heres an interview he did recently did with Hot 97.

Ryan Leslie @ SOB's

Towards the end of the show Ryan spurted out phrases like, "They told me to stay off the stage. They said I couldn't Do this!" Well last night at SOB's Ryan Leslie was a the star he was always supposed to be. He commanded the stage and obtained a confident cool presence that many thought he didn't have. Besides an attention hungry Llyod that wouldn't let go of the mic, it was a close to perfect night. The act that preceded Ryan also had the crowd going bananas, Francis and the Lights. If you don't know who they are take Prince, Elvis, Jame Brown and sprinkle on a little hipster. Yup, that's Francis and the Lights. Ryan performed every song off his self titled album Ryan Leslie. I was always a fan but last night solidified it. The performance was perfect. All of the your favorite tracks on the album like Giberish and Quicksand worked flawlessly with the band. The vocals were on point and so was the salmon...Alltogether if you haven't cop'd his album yet, you know what to do.

Bat For Lashes

In a world where your scene can sell your music better than your music, Khan is an outsider. I don’t know exactly what I was looking for before I listened to her music but, when I did, I knew I found it. “Although the UK is currently a-buzz with new, innovative female acts like Little Boots, Micachu and Florence & The Machine, Khan has always existed in her own separate world. Once in Brooklyn she found herself at home amongst Gang Gang Dance, TV On The Radio and MGMT. “ (Fader Magazine) Her father was a devout Muslim and she attended Christian schools when she was younger. I do not think that it was a coincidence that she uses the name “Daniel” as the name for her new single. In the Old Testament, Daniel had many prophetic visions as well as many apocalyptic ones. He is an important figure to both Christians and Jews. All in all, I think Khan is ILL!! Not sick… Here’s a brief story Khan shared with Fader Magazine.

“I was walking along the shore, crying because I was having a really bad day, singing to myself and feeling emotional,” she recalls. “The sun was setting and a school of nine dolphins came swimming by. My girlfriends were like, Tasha! Oh my god! It’s your spirit animal! I needed to reach out to some kind of objectivity, some universal cosmic something. You can just drown in the vortex, but when they came, it snapped me out. To see the beauty of being, they’re so free and wild.” Khan says that this actually happened twice, although the second time, her presence only brought three dolphins to the shore. (Fader Magazine)

The 10 Major Newspapers That Will Either Fold or Go Digital Next

By 24/7 WALL ST. 24/7 Wall St.

Over the last few weeks, the newspaper industry has entered a new period of decline. The parent of the papers in Philadelphia declared bankruptcy as did the Journal Register chain. The Rocky Mountain News closed and the Seattle Post Intelligencer, owned by Hearst, will almost certainly close or only publish online. Hearst has said it will also close The San Francisco Chronicle if it cannot make massive cuts at the paper. The most recent rumor is that the company will fire half of the editorial staff. That action still may not be enough to make the property profitable.

24/7 Wall St. has created its list of the ten major daily papers that are most likely to fold or shut their print operations and only publish online. The properties were chosen based on the financial strength of their parent companies, the amount of direct competition that they face in their markets, and industry information on how much money they are losing. Based on this analysis, it is possible that eight of the fifty largest daily newspapers in the United States could cease publication in the next eighteen months. (Read: "The Race for a Better Read")

1. The Philadelphia Daily News. The smaller of the two papers owned by The Philadelphia Newspapers LLC, which recently filed for bankruptcy. The parent company says it will make money this year, but with newspaper advertising still falling sharply, the city cannot support two papers and the Daily News has a daily circulation of only about 100,000. The tabloid has a small staff, most of whom could probably stay on at Philly.com, the web operation for both of the city dailies.

2. The Minneapolis Star Tribune has filed for Chapter 11. The paper may not make money this year even without the costs of debt coverage. The company said it made $26 million last year, about half of what it made in 2007. The odds are that the Star Tribune will lose money this year if its ad revenue drops another 20%. There is no point for creditors to keep the paper open if it cannot generate cash. It could become an all-digital property, but supporting a daily circulation of over 300,000 is too much of a burden. It could survive if its rival the St. Paul Pioneer Press folds. A grim race.

3. The Miami Herald, which has a daily circulation of about 220,000. It is owned by McClatchy, a publicly traded company which could be the next chain to go into Chapter 11. The Herald has been on the market since December, and but no serious bidders have emerged. Newspaper advertising has been especially hard hit in Florida because of the tremendous loss in real estate advertising. The online version of the paper is already well-read in the Miami area and Latin America and the Caribbean. The Herald has strong competition north of it in Fort Lauderdale. There is a very small chance it could merge with the Sun-Sentinel, but it is more likely that the Herald will go online-only with two editions, one for English-speaking readers and one for Spanish.

4. The Detroit News is one of two daily papers in the big American city badly hit by the economic downturn. It is unlikely that it can merge with the larger Detroit Free Press which is owned by Gannett. It is hard to see what would be in it for Gannett. With the fortunes of Detroit getting worse each day, cutting back the number of days that the paper is delivered will not save enough money to keep the paper open.

5. The Boston Globe is, based on several accounts, losing $1 million a week. One investment bank recently said that the paper is only worth $20 million. The paper is the flagship of what the Globe's parent, The New York Times, calls the New England Media Group. NYT has substantial financial problems of its own. Last year, ad revenue for the New England properties was down 18%. That is likely to continue or get worse this year. Supporting larger losses at the Globe will become nearly impossible. Boston.com, the online site that includes the digital aspects of the Globe, will probably be all that will be left of the operation.

6. The San Francisco Chronicle. Parent company Hearst has already set a deadline for shutting the paper if it cannot make tremendous cost cuts. The Chronicle lost as much as $70 million last year. Even if the company could lower its costs, the northern California economy is in bad shape. The online version of the paper could be the only version by the middle of the 2009.

7. The Chicago Sun Times is the smaller of two newspapers in the city. Its parent company, Sun-Times Media Group trades for $.03 a share. Davidson Kempner, a large shareholder in the firm, has dumped the CEO and most of the board. The paper has no chance of competing with The Chicago Tribune.

8. NY Daily News is one of several large papers fighting for circulation and advertising in the New York City area. Unlike The New York Times, New York Post, Newsday, and Newark Star Ledger, the Daily News is not owned by a larger organization. Real estate billionaire Mort Zuckerman owns the paper. Based on figures from other big dailies it could easily lose $60 million or $70 million and has no chance of recovering from that level

9. The Fort Worth Star Telegram is another one of the big dailies that competes with a larger paper in a neighboring market - Dallas. The parent of The Dallas Morning News, Belo, is arguably a stronger company that the Star Telegram's parent, McClatchy. The Morning News has a circulation of about 350,000 and the Star Telegram has just over 200,000. The Star Telegram will have to shut down or become an edition of its rival. Putting them together would save tens of millions of dollars a year.

10. The Cleveland Plain Dealer is in one of the economically weakest markets in the country. Its parent, Advance Publications, has already threatened to close its paper in Newark. Employees gave up enough in terms of concessions to keep the paper open. Advance, owned by the Newhouse family, is carrying the burden of its paper plus Conde Nast, its magazine group which is losing advertising revenue. The Plain Dealer will be shut or go digital by the end of next year.

Motown Legacy Breaking Out-Novel

I stumbled upon this artist looking over Spin magazines’ digital copy of the March issue. Novel is the next generation of the hip hop artist. His father is Mickey Stevenson, a former Motown songwriter-producer and his grandfather is Solomon Burke, a soul legend. He’s diverse and has a strong musical background to support his creativity. I mean, the man rapped over the Ben Fold’s plaintive 2001 ballad “The Luckiest.” He also spent some time writing for artists such as Alicia Keys. “He sounds both street and schooled, spitting rhymes like ‘I’m the blade of the knife/ That slaughtered the lamb/ For greater sacrifice/ The son of Abraham.” (Spin Magazine)
